Non-surgical pain relieving remedies for osteoarthritis

What is osteoarthritis?

A degenerative condition of knee joints which is progressive in nature and is often seen in people above 50 years of age is known as osteoarthritis. The condition leads to movement loss, pain and stiffness of the joints.

Why are alternative remedies needed?

Most people are turning away from surgical treatments for the fear of not resolving their problems even after surgery. This has brought into light a number of alternative measures which are being opted by many doctors as well as patients for an effective osteoarthritis pain management. These remedies though do not cure the arthritis or the bone changes which have already taken place but can definitely slow down the overall process and elevate the physical wellness of patient.

Pain relieving methods

Natural remedies

Avocado and soybean unsaponifiables which are extracts made from soybean oils and avocados are being used as an effective supplement for arthritis. This does not only stimulate cartilage repair but also decrease the inflammation and stiffness, hence reducing the need for non-steroidal drugs.

Pharmacological treatment

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate: Generally taken in combination. The chondroitin by blocking the enzymes responsible for destroying cartilage maintains its elasticity and suppleness. The glucosamine complex works on building the cartilage blocks and also repairs it so that the joint is still cushioned while the arthritis process is active.

Analgesics: Oral pain killers taken according to the intensity of pain and do not reduce inflammation.
NSAIDs: Over the counter non-steroidal medicines relieve both pain and inflammation and also cause minor side effects.

Physical therapy

A therapeutic program of giving electrical currents using various modalities like TENS, ultrasonic massage or heat treatment in a graded fashion accelerates blood circulation and has induced marked reduction of pain and stiffness to people suffering with knee osteoarthritis.

Apart from this, a good exercise regime which involves both active exercises and weight training strengthens the muscles around the joint to enable them to take everyday stress while performing routine work.
Massage can be given to some patients to encourage relaxation and postural guidance is given. Other than this, shoe inserts. Braces and assistive walking aids are prescribed to make your joints stress free.

Yoga therapy

Gentle yoga movements can induce flexibility, enhance balance, bring strength and reduce pain and swelling during osteoarthritis. Consent from your doctor, prior joining yoga is recommended.

Stem cell treatment

Stem cell therapy is an attempt of naturally repairing the knee joint. Patient’s own stem cells are injected in the joint which transform into chondrocytes and produce fresh cartilage to nourish the joint cavity. The healing in this case is faster and well accepted by the knee joint and there is no fear of rejection.

Invasive procedures

Acupuncture: Minor needling procedure on specific pain points.
Cortisone injections: Corticosteroid injections are given to relieve joint swelling and pain mainly but repetitive shots are not advised.
Lubrication injections: These are injections of hyaluronic acid to lubricate the joint and provide cushioning thus preventing friction.
