Significance of postural education in physical therapy

Posture is the first thing to get affected whenever our spine gets exposed to any kind on pain, infection, injury or due to tightening of ligaments and muscles around it. Since the spine works closely with the functions and position of head, upper body and legs, the balance and spinal movements are sacrificed most.

To re educate the body once again about the posture it is important to design a program which consists of spinal movements, relaxing of stiff muscles by stretching and strengthening of muscles concerned with spine, shoulder and buttocks.

While the exercises are done to reshape the spine to its natural form, training about walking, sleeping, sitting and daily activities is also given to the patient.

Benefits of patient – therapist interaction

When the patient cooperates actively, the efficacy of therapy increases and this in turn is beneficial to the patient. During exaggerated painful condition, the patient becomes restricted and is not able to perform simple movements like bending, lifting the leg, getting up from a chair and is seldom able to do the given exercises.

The role of a physical therapist comes into play at this particular time when the therapist becomes a helping hand by guiding and encouraging the patient in every little movement he does. The patient also learns correct exercise pattern and can become more comfortable by interacting with the therapist as much as possible. Another advantage of a good co ordination between patient and therapist is that determining the level of exhaustion becomes easier.

Is there any electrical treatment of back pain?

The electrical modalities are applied to relieve the pain at earliest so that the patient is able to perform the exercises willingly. With treatment options like ultrasonic, TENS, short wave diathermy and hot packs the pain levels reduce and patient becomes more independent. Hence it is always advisable to begin physical therapy as soon as the diagnosis is made.

What is lumbar stabilization?

Lumbar stabilization, as the name suggests is a method to stabilize the lumbar vertebrae when the articulation of consecutive vertebrae is disturbed due to any reasons. It is not a standard regime which can be applied to anybody due to the fact that all patient conditions come with individual differences.

Thus, a program including back training, posture training, strengthening exercises and flexibility is customized for patient. These are done without causing pain to the patient and thus lead to a much improved mobility and physical fitness.

The postural re education program is followed by frequent assessments by the doctor and the therapist so that patient himself can become aware of the positive results.

Exercises for spinal stabilization

There are simple exercises which include individual muscle contractions during back pain physical therapy like:

  •     Lying down with flexed knees, place a towel under the back and press.
  •     Lift both hips in lying down position.
  •     Raise one leg straight up followed by another.
  •     Lift the chest up while lying down on stomach.
